Prof. Olu Ajakaiye is currently Executive Chairman, African Centre for Shared Development Capacity Building (ACSDCB), Ibadan – a research and training Centre for Shared Development Policy, Planning, Implementation and Impact/Outcome Assessment in Africa. He is also President, Nigeria Economic Society beginning in September, 2013 and Honourary Special Adviser to the President on the Economy/Member National Economic Management Team. Prior to this, he was Director of Research at the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) Nairobi (2004-2011) and Director-General, Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research (NISER), Ibadan (1999-2004).
Olu Ajakaiye obtained his B.Sc. Econs from University of Ibadan, Nigeria and PhD Economics from Boston University, USA. He was a John Holt Scholar at the University of Ibadan, a NISER Scholar at the Boston University and recipient of IDRC Thesis Grant in 1982. In 1993 he was a visiting researcher at Université Laval under the AERC institutional attachment programme.
Prof. Ajakaiye served on various planning bodies in Nigeria, including the Joint Planning Board and the National Council on Development Planning. He chaired the National Core Team for the preparation of the Interim Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (I-PRSP). He was Vice President for Africa, Intergovernmental Council of Management of Social Transformations (MOST) of UNESCO (2000–2004); editor, Journal of Economic Management (1995–2002); business manager, African Journal of Economic Policy (1994–2004) and Editor, AERC Supplement of the Journal of African Economies (JAE) (2004-2011). He served on National Working Committee for the Preparation of Nigeria’s Vision 2020 and Advisory Panel of the African Human Development Report, 2011.
Currently he coordinates the Green Economy Framework for Nigeria Under the Africa Adaptation Programme of UNDP and serves on Advisory Committee of the Centre for Globalization and Development, University of Gothenburg, Technical Advisory Group of the Natural Resource Charter, University of Oxford, and Advisory Board of WTO Chairs Programme, Deputy Chair, International Lawyers and Economics Against Poverty (ILEAP), Canada, Advisory Committee, AGRODEP, among others. He consults for several international organizations including The World Bank, UNECA, NEPAD Agency, UNDP, ECOWAS, IDRC, ACBF, JICA (UK) Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and several government Ministries, Agencies and Departments in Nigeria.
He specializes in development economics and has published books, monographs, journal articles and chapters in books, all in the area of economic development.
